Keeping Kids Engaged
As a family photographer, one of the questions I hear most often is, "What if my kids don't cooperate during our photo session?"
The good news is that some of the best family photos happen when children are simply being themselves. The goal isn't perfect behavior—it's capturing genuine smiles, laughter, and connection.
Here are a few tips I share with families before their photoshoot:
Don't Stress About Perfect Smiles
Children can sense when parents are feeling anxious. Instead of asking them to smile for every photo, focus on having fun together. Natural expressions always photograph better than forced ones.
Bring a Favorite Snack
A small, mess-free snack can be a lifesaver during a family photo session. Having a quick break helps keep little ones happy and energized, especially for younger children.
Let Kids Move and Explore
Some of the most memorable photos happen when kids are running, playing, or interacting naturally with their surroundings. I often incorporate games, walks, and playful prompts to keep children engaged throughout the session.
Schedule Around Their Best Time of Day
Whenever possible, choose a photoshoot time that works with your child's routine. Well-rested kids are typically more relaxed and ready to have fun in front of the camera.
Trust the Process
As a photographer, I expect kids to be kids. Whether they're shy, energetic, silly, or curious, those unique personalities are what make family photos meaningful. My job is to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable and can enjoy the experience.
At the end of the day, the best family photography sessions aren't about perfection—they're about capturing authentic moments you'll treasure for years to come. A little laughter, a little movement, and a lot of patience often create the most beautiful images.
